Members of our talented Heritage Academy Dance Company had the wonderful opportunity to work with some very special athletes in the Laveen area this year. The Laveen Special Olympic Cheer Team was looking for some coaches. Parent Stacy Hoyt says, “After reaching out to the community we quickly built a team but needed to find a good coach. We asked [Heritage Dance Teacher] Mackenzie Woods if she had any dancers who would be interested. We were hoping for 1 or 2 but were impressed that 6 students wanted to coach!”
Lexi Yakimovich, Taylor Lunt, LaTrell Beck, Celina Villa, Jaedyn Randolph, and Rachell Quintero Sanchez all stepped forward excited for the opportunity to work with these special needs athletes ranging in age from 5-13 years old.
Heritage Junior Taylor Lunt said, ”Special Olympics was such an amazing experience and opportunity. All of us coaches have felt a true change in our lives and we owe it all to these kids. They are inspirational and have truly wonderful spirits. We can all agree that we have never seen such a talented and spirited cheer team!! We owe a huge thank you to the Laveen CrossFit gym that allowed us to practice weekly, and to the parents who were the biggest supporters of these kids!”
Mrs. Hoyt continues, “[The coaches] worked well together and were amazing mentors to the special needs children. They ran practice, choreographed the dances, made the kids feel confident and helped them compete in a regional and state competition. They went above and beyond what was expected. We are so impressed with [their] leadership skills and kindness!”
Congratulations to the Laveen Special Olympic Cheer Line on completing their first season and for representing Laveen well!
